So Called Global Warming
In today’s HJ there is a letter from my friend Charles Ashurst. He is a true believer in the religion of Global Warming. Mr. Ashurst is an engineer by training and profession. Unfortunately, his prior experience measuring CO2 output from plants has lead him into an unsupported belief. And I do mean belief! The title for his letter says it all. “Global Warming a Cold Hard Reality.” Not theory but reality. Now, since this theory is based solely on predictions based upon modeling, I think that it is way too premature to say reality. What is really telling is that weather patterns which we have been experiencing since approximately 1970 are very similar to the time period 1918-1940 (you know the dustbowl period). During this time frame, the Arctic mostly melted, like it has now and temperatures were similar in Northern America. All at a time when CO2 levels were much lower than now. What you are not usually told by the true believers (or the morally bankrupt who exploit this theory for their own agenda), is that this theory is based upon computer modeling which doesn’t predict our current situation at all, let alone the next fifty years. They always seem to miss the most important part that is even if the world totally committed to the Kyoto treaty it would only lower the temperature approx. 0.35°C! They also never talk about the economics of the whole issue.

In his letter he talks about the great advantages of using renewable energy sources without the mention of the fact that none of the current technology would even come close to the current costs of supplying energy by the normal means. Also remember the emerging economies of China, India etc are exempt. So while they continue to pollute at unregulated rates, we would be forced to implement all kinds of unproven or uneconomical technologies at the estimated cost of 870 billion dollars per year. All of this for a theoretical explanation for the observable conditions which find ourselves in. There is just as much or more evidence to support the supposition that current warming is due to fluctuation in the output of the sun.
When anyone becomes a fanatic about any given issue, it is always wise to ask yourself, what motivates them to such an extreme state. Anyone who criticizes their theory is immediately labeled a stooge of the coal or other polluting industries.
